Travel to our Holiday Home in Languedoc Roussillon
Our superbly located holiday villa in the Pyrenees Orientales region is easy to reach by road, air or rail. The villa is only 10km from the nearest motorway and is easy to find. Three local airports within easy driving distance served by budget and scheduled carriers offer a wide choice of routes.
If you don't travel in your own car we do recommend that you hire a car at your arrival airport or station and have it available during your stay to take maximum advantage of all that the region has to offer.
By Road
We are just 10km from the nearest motorway junction (A9 at Le Boulou), as shown on our map page. We will send out detailed travel instructions to find the house with the booking confirmation.
For crossing the channel there is the Eurotunnel shuttle or P & O, Seafrance and Norfolk line ferries from Dover, LD lines ferries from Dover, Newhaven and Portsmouth and Brittany ferries from Portsmouth, Poole and Plymouth.
France has an excellent motorway network, and there are several alternative routes from the channel ports. According to my map Calais to Perpignan is 1158km with an estimated driving time of 12 hours. Depending on how fast you drive, how many breaks you want to take, and whether you swap drivers it is possible to drive from the channel ports in one day - we prefer to be more leisurely and have one overnight stop.
Currently our favourite route avoids Paris and from Calais we go via Boulogne, Abbeville, Rouen, Dreux, Chartres, Orleans, Vierzon, Chateauroux, Limoges, Brive-la-Gaillarde, Cahors, Montauban, Toulouse, Carcassonne and Perpignan. Part of this route between Rouen and Orleans is non-motorway (saves on the tolls!), but mostly it is still dual carriageway and reasonably fast.
An alternative route from Orleans is over the Massif Central via Bourges, Clermont Ferrand and the famous new bridge at Millau with its spectacular views.
Both of the above routes from Orleans can also be followed after going either through or round Paris.
Another route which avoids Paris is Calais, Reims, Dijon, Lyon, Nimes, Perpignan. This is longer than the other routes and can be much busier in the summer.
By Air
The Villa is easily accessible from several local airports served by the budget airlines. (The budget airlines often have special offers with very cheap fares out of the main season, on specific dates which are only available for a limited time, so it is well worth searching on their websites to find these.)
- Perpignan - This is the nearest at about 30km/40min. In the summer it is served by Ryanair, Flybe and BMI
-Girona is over the border in Spain and is 97km/1hr 15min away. It is a straightforward motorway journey - the airport is next to a junction onto the motorway which goes to France and to the Le Boulou junction. It is a hub airport for Ryanair, which means that it has a huge choice of frequent flights to and from many UK airports, and other European airports throughout the year. (Ryanair sometimes call it Barcelona Girona on some parts of their website).
-Barcelona Reus is further away than Girona at 2hrs, but has been used in the past by several of our guests. Operators there include Easyjet and Ryanair.
-Carcassonne is about 2hrs drive. It is a small, rapidly developing airport which is served by Ryanair year round. It is also close to a motorway junction and is a straightforward drive, and has been used by several of our guests.
There are also several other airports within driving distance: Beziers, Montpellier, Toulouse etc.
Please note that airlines do change their routes, so please check with them that the route/flights you need are still available.
Car hire is available from the major rental companies at all these airports.
Most of our guests fly to either Perpignan or Girona. When we travel by air we fly to Girona and rent from Hertz.
By Rail
Eurostar trains from the new St Pancras station connect with TGV trains to Montpellier and Perpignan. Through tickets may also be booked in advance online via Rail Europe. (The fastest trains now take less than 9 hours to Perpignan). Car hire is available from Perpignan. From Perpignan trains connect to Argeles-sur-Mer where taxis are available.
